Morton Returns For Group 1 Gold Bullion Defence

DEFENDING G1 Gold Bullion champ, Victorian sprinter Morton, makes his comeback to racing in Thursday's heats of this year’s series at Albion Park.

DEFENDING Group 1 Gold Bullion champion, Victorian powerhouse Morton, makes his comeback to racing in Thursday night's heats of this year's series at Albion Park.

Morton (Tommy Shelby-Chloe Louise) got up in the very last stride to down Jay Is Jay's litter brother All Natural to win last year's Gold Bullion in emphatic fashion.

He has not started since November 4 when failing to finish behind Hector Fawley in the Group 3 Silver Bullet at The Meadows.

"He did a fibula and a back toe," said trainer Jason Sharp.

"We were advised to get the toe off and it has taken him a little while to become accustomed to that.

"But, last Thursday he trialled really well at The Meadows (in 29.89).

"Yes, he will be a run or two short of his peak, but he will be hard to beat.

"And he certainly knows the track."

Might sprinter Morton returns to defend his Gold Bullion title at Albion Park on Thursday night

Morton won both the Group 2 Queensland Derby and the Group 1 Gold Bullion during last year's summer campaign in Queensland.

He has since finished second in the G1 Adelaide Cup, G2 Warrnambool Cup, third in the G1 Silver Chief, The Sandgroper, G1 Harrison-Dawson, Brisbane Cup Consolation and a finalist in the G1 Temlee, G1 Australian Cup and G2 Cranbourne Cup.

It is a stellar career that encompasses just 40 starts for 18 wins and stakes of $579,000.

Initially, during his break from racing, Jason had planned to undergo a brief stud career.

"Alastair at Sandown Vet Clinic advised against it because of the operation to remove his toe," Sharp added.

"We will race him on for another 12 months and then think about a stud career."

Jason has looked at the field against him at Albion Park and is satisfied he can be hard to beat.

"He would be meeting just as tough a field if he was to start back in a top grade at The Meadows," he said.

"Having been at Albion Park so many times, he did not need to trial there again in preparation for this series.

"We will continue our usual campaign by flying him to Brisbane on Thursday.

"He is a fabulous traveller."

Albion Park has attracted four heats of the Gold Bullion and three for the G1 Gold Cup (710m).
