Mackay Sets Sights On Gold Bullion With Verdi

VERDI went within “a head” of breaking Barefoot Zulu’s Grafton track record over 450m on Sunday and now will head to Queensland for a G1 campaign.

VERDI went within "a head" of breaking Barefoot Zulu's Grafton track record over 450m on Sunday and now will head to Queensland with a possible Group 1 campaign in mind.

Verdi (Bernardo-Red Rocks) sped to the front and was untroubled to run 25.00 seconds, the second fastest run at the track when winning by nine lengths on Sunday for trainer Jason Mackay.

"He's the proper stuff," said Mackay.

"He needed a strong 450 metre race to bring him on and now we will be heading to Albion Park with him and a few others.

"And that could include a start in the Group 1 series."

That Group 1 race is the Gold Bullion worth $250,000 to the winner with heats on January 23 and the final on January 30.

Jason Thompson sent the dog north to Jason prior to the Maitland Cup series.

Verdi is Queensland bound for a tilt at the Summer riches

"He got flattened at Maitland and needed a little time off with an injury, but he's come back to win two 400s in quick time," he added.

"I wanted to get a 450 into him and Grafton suited nicely.

"He's got everything this dog, the ability, temperament, and once he gets back up to 500 metres he will lead easily."

Verdi has won 18 of 31 starts and has three times been a Group finalist.

Verdi will be among several Mackay kennel dogs to head to Queensland.

"Exploded hurt a hip support in the G1 Topgun Stayers in November," said Jason.

"He's on his way back now but Albion Park's distance race is too soon for him."
