Wow Makes It Nine Straight With Temlee Romp

SPRINTING powerhouse Wow has made it nine straight wins with a stunning performance in Saturday night's Group 1 Temlee (525m) at The Meadows.

The Karina Britton-trained son of Fernando Bale journeyed to Victoria for the Group 1 invitational with big expectations and if he anything he returns home to New South Wales having exceeded them.

Now a winner at 17 of his 25 starts, the last start Paws Of Thunder hero handled his official debut at The Meadows like a seasoned veteran, taking out the $100,000 first prize in comprehensive fashion, running 29.77.

Scoring by 1 ¾ lengths over a gallant Yozo Bale it was a trademark Wow performance, following up last week's trial at The Meadows in outstanding style.

Continuing his insatiable run of form which has seen him unbeaten since October, Wow put on a clinic with the race appearing safely in his keeping from the first turn onwards.

For an emotional Karina Britton the watershed win continued what has been a whirlwind year of racing where the deeds of Wow and his litter brother Ad Astra – a heat winner of the Group 2 Bulli Gold Cup on Saturday night – seemingly know no bounds.

"He was a star already but I think tonight he's proven himself to be one of the best," Karina beamed.

"I think I went blank during the race … I just froze.

"I saw he was running third but I wasn't confident. I didn't even look to see what was behind him. I was just thinking, ‘keep going and he did!'

"I just wanted to see how he went tonight before I decided about the Australian Cup heats. The Richmond Derby is on at home but I think we have to come back after tonight."

Wow's Temlee success on Saturday night is just the second time since the races inception in 2003 that a New South Wales trained greyhound has taken the trophy home.

You have to go all the way back to 2005 to find the other when Hall of Famer Paua To Burn won the race for Steve White when he resided in New South Wales before shifting to Victoria a few years later.

Wow now thunders into next week's Group 1 Australian Cup heats at the pointy end of betting for the $300,000-to-the-winner showpiece.

And following Saturday night's spectacular win it's hard not to see the track recording breaking chaser in the thick of things for the big dance in a fortnight's time.

Finishing third in the Temlee was a gallant Tiggerlong Tonk having his first run back from a short spell, handing trainer Correy Grenfell second and third across the line with Yozo Bale filling the runner-up position.

Race favourite Shima Shine finished fifth while Tommy Shelby wound up seventh.
