No Sale Works Wonders For Perth Cup Hopeful

LATE in January, a Darwin buyer offered $12,000 to buy Rare Speed, on Saturday night she will contest the lucrative Group 1 Perth Cup.

LATE in January, a Darwin buyer offered $12,000 to buy Rare Speed.

On Saturday night, that Bernardo-On The Runway bitch runs for a $200,000 winner's purse in the Group 1 Perth Cup (520m) at Cannington.

Rare Speed has been in the Kody Charles kennel since September 2023, sent west by Darren Puleio.

"Kody asked if she was for sale late in January," Puleio said.

FIELDS AND FORM CANNINGTON SATURDAY NIGHT

"I said we wanted $15,000 but the Darwin buyer would only go to $12,500."

The following Saturday, Rare Speed won at Cannington and since the deal of sale fell through, she has earned $30,000.

"And, here we are going into a Perth Cup final with a bitch that lives up to her name with rare early pace, and around Cannington a track she loves," he added.

Rare Speed winning her heat of the Perth Cup

"Of course, she is meeting a hot, hot field in the final and realistically she is up against it.

"But, if she happened to ping as usual and get a break on them … well you never know."

Rare Speed, a litter sister to Pass The Buck (G2 Warragul Cup, finalist The Phoenix) and Lamia Mila (Ballarat track record, finalist G2 Laurels), has a great worth as a future broodbitch.

She has won 16 of 59 starts and earned $97,000.

"She is a bitch that needed to mature," Puleio added.

"Kody has had dogs for us in the past and we sent her over early days for him to train."

Rare Speed ran 29.68 to down luckless Queenslander Barefoot Zulu in their heat last Saturday night.

She has drawn box six in the final and is at $35 in markets.
