ONE lucky sports fan will have the chance to win $50,000 when the Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) slot holder takes its place in The TAB Phoenix at The Meadows on December 18.
And with the NSW sprinting ranks currently boasting an embarrassment of riches, the greyhound which books a spot in the $1.145m Victorian showpiece won’t be doing so to make up the numbers.
In an innovative approach to the inaugural The Phoenix, GRNSW is teaming up with The Daily Telegraph where the public will ultimately decide which greyhound takes its place in the $750,000-to-the-winner race.
“When GRNSW decided to get involved in The Phoenix it was always our ambition to use it as a vehicle to promote the sport and expose it to a wider audience,” GRNSW Chief Executive Tony Mestrov said.
“Teaming up with The Daily Telegraph will deliver on the goal of selecting a greyhound which can win The Phoenix but at the same time bring the public along for the journey as well.
“When the GRNSW slot holder is placed in the boxes at The Meadows on December 18 it will do so representing NSW as The People’s Dog.”
In early November, GRNSW and The Daily Telegraph will release voting details where 10 greyhounds will be vying for the coveted place in The Phoenix.
The first five places have already been secured with NSW group race winners since GRNSW were awarded a slot handed spots.
They are G1 Vic Peters hero Bandit Ned, G1 Peter Mosman winner, Light And Lily, G2 Black Top winner Zipping Kyrgios, G2 Lismore Cup victor Cash View and G3 Goulburn Cup winner Wow.
The final five voting positions will be decided by the panel which selects the NSW Greyhound of The Year.
“From there it will be the public – sports and racing fans – which decide which greyhound heads to Victoria for The Phoenix,” Mestrov added.
“And as an incentive for the voting public one lucky person will have the chance to win up to $50,000 if the NSW slot holder wins The Phoenix on the big stage in December.”
The successful greyhound and competition winner will be announced on November 29.
“We are looking forward to everyone in the industry getting on board and throwing their support behind this concept to ensure NSW gets the best dog to represent the state – and hopefully take out the inaugural running of a fantastic new race,” Mestrov added.
On Saturday week at The Meadows, NSW will for the first time be represented by four runners in the Group 1 Topgun (525m).
Already guaranteed a chance for the GRNSW The Phoenix slot, Bandit Ned, Zipping Kyrgios and Wow will contest the $150,000-to-the-winner invitation, as will Jungle Deuce, all but certain to be in The Phoenix mix also.
Race sponsor TAB currently have Bandit Ned a $5 equal favourite with Aston Rupee for The Phoenix.
