WE'RE just eight weeks away from the famous Coonamble carnival with the club gearing up for another hugely successful October long weekend of racing.

Supported this year by major sponsors Garrards Horse & Hound and the Greyhound Recorder, the carnival will stretch over four fantastic days of festivities, beginning Friday October 4 through to a gala day of racing action on Monday, October 7.

"Everything's coming together really well – the club couldn't be happier," said event organiser Kevin Gordon, recently appointed to the Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) board.

"Accommodation bookings are moving very quickly and the response from participants about the feature races again on offer has been very positive.

“The club has been working overtime to have the track in pristine shape again this year and by all reports it's in terrific condition with recent trial numbers very healthy.

"The bookmakers ring will be as strong as ever and on the back of some really positive announcements for NSW greyhound racing recently, including the prizemoney increases, the club is expecting a top carnival both on and off the track."

Gordon also thanked the long list of sponsors who return in 2019.

"We've managed to assemble a strong list of sponsors to support the carnival and on behalf of the club I extend our thanks to each and every supporter that makes the carnival what it is," added Gordon.

The headline event in 2019 will be the Garrards Horse & Hound Gold Maiden Series (305m), carrying a cool $10,000 to-the-winner.

First run in 1977, the event has been won by some of the sport's elite sprinters throughout its 42 year history.

"A big thanks to Garrards for their sponsorship of the carnival – their support of racing across all three codes shouldn't go unnoticed," added Gordon.

"We've put together a terrific list of sires' services that will go up for auction and plans are well underway for another bumper Calcutta at Coonamble Bowling Club.

"This carnival is vitally important to the Coonamble town and with some terrific races on offer, we look forward to showcasing the fabric of country greyhound racing successfully yet again.”

In further positive news, Gordon also announced that GRNSW CEO Tony Mestrov will be in attendance at the carnival's opening Friday night meeting and the Saturday program.

"Tony and some of his leadership team were keen to get there on the Friday night and we're looking forward to having them," added Gordon.

"The Coonamble Carnival is the absolute fabric of NSW country racing and we can't wait for another huge weekend … it's not far away now at all!"
