Palawa King To Enter The Jungle At HQ

All eyes will be on Sky Racing on Saturday night when two of the sports big guns - Palawa King and Jungle Johnny go head-to-head at Wentworth Park.

PALAWA King has done it all while Jungle Johnny's connections hope to one day achieve something similar and on Saturday the two stars will set Wentworth Park alight when they clash.

Veteran chaser Palawa King, a 31-time winner with earnings of more than $1 million will clash with the young buck, Jungle Johnny, a five-time winner that's earned a tick over $40,000.

FIELDS AND FORM WENTWORTH PARK SATURDAY NIGHT

While Jungle Johnny has earned a pittance compared to the 2023 Australian Greyhound of the Year, he's one of the most exciting chasers in NSW.

"He's a pretty special dog but he's got a long way to go to be anything like Palawa King," Jungle Johnny's trainer Mark Gatt said.

"He can only do what we've asked of him, and he's been doing it very well since joining the kennel."

On Saturday night Palawa King, a five-time Group 1 winner, will be chasing a berth in the $75,000-to-the-winner Group 1 Rookie Rebel (600m) in Victoria on Saturday week.

"That's what we're hoping for," Palawa King's trainer Jack Smith said. "A good performance on Saturday night and hopefully we'll be one of the eight invitees."

Palawa King returned last week at Dubbo after overcoming a hip support injury that put him out of action for the best part of five months.

A slashing finish to go down to his kennel mate Red Hot Frankie by a half-head confirmed there was still the necessary zest for racing in the four-year-old chaser.

"He doesn't look like an old dog and he doesn't act like one," Smith said.

"He still gets excited when he sees you dressed to go to the dogs.

"This is just a bit of fun for him as far as I'm concerned.

"While ever he wants to do it, we'll keep going."

Palawa King has drawn the prized one box for Saturday's Non Graded 520m Stake with Jungle Johnny launching from box three while another exciting prospect, Group 1 National Futurity winner Laura Keeping, jumps from box six.

"It's a real case of the old and the new this race," Mark Gatt said.

"Two of the best you chasers in the state and the grand old stayer coming back.

"My bloke drops back in trip after a couple of 600s and he's racing really well.

"I'm hoping our other runner Sammy Ethan can lead and Johnny gets a clear run then may the best dog win."

Gatt said the main target race for Jungle Johnny is next month's $100,000-to-the-winner Ladbrokes Country Classic (605m) at Dubbo.
