Pedigree Watch: NZ Cup Winner Pinny Mack

EVERY now and then, a pedigree is so well designed, that it demands the closest of scrutiny.

One such pedigree is that of last week's Group 1 New Zealand Cup winner Pinny Mack (Cosmic Rumble-Flying Sienna by Bombastic Shiraz).

Often, a fine pedigree design can come up with one or two individuals who stand out. But in the case of Pinny Mack, the entire litter of eight named offspring are worthy of mention.

Pinny Mack, of course, is the standout winning 31 of his 55 starts and running 16 placings for $213,000 in stakes.

But, also from the litter and worthy of mention are King Tony (17 wins, 25 placings, $46,000), Moto Doll (8 wins, 20 placings, $48,000), Ironbark Lass (10 wins, 30 placings, $24,000), Mulga Lass (12 wins, 29 placings, $28,000) and Sticky Vicki (11 wins, 28 placings, $24,000).

Pinny Mack has also won the Group 1 NZ Waterloo Cup, been third in the Group 1 Auckland Cup and was a finalist in the WA Puppy Classic before being sent to NZ.

Well, what's so special about this pedigree that has produced a 100 percent winning offspring and a Group 1 star?

This is the direct line of Affidavit and the same direct damline as Group 1 Topgun winner Black Enforcer … and many, many other stars.

But, what is so special about this mating is that sire Cosmic Rumble and dam Flying Sienna are bred along identical lines, with a shuffle about to make it interesting.

Cosmic Rumble is by Spiral Nikita from a daughter of Brett Lee who is out of a daughter of Malawi's Prince.

Flying Sienna is by Bombastic Shiraz (whose dam is by Malawi's Prince) and is out of a daughter of Digital (his dam is by Spiral Nikita) and her second dam is by Brett Lee.

Pinny Mack's pedigree carries Spiral Nikita 2×5, Brett Lee 3×4, and Malawi's Prince 4×4.

And, if we look even closer, Spiritual Rumble (dam of Cosmic Rumble) and Flying Sienna herself are both bred on a Brett Lee/Malawi's Prince cross but in reverse.

Flying Sienna, winner of 14 races from 26 starts, was a multiple Cannington winner but also won at Sandown finishing third behind Miss Mozoltov and Xylia Allen (yes Xylia Allen) in a semi-final of the Laurels.

In her first mating, to Elite State, she also produced Marydoll (25 wins, $93,000) but overall the litter was nowhere near as good as that by Cosmic Rumble that was saturated by line breeding.

WHICH brings me to last week's smart city winner King Colt (Brett Lee-Total Upgrade by Collision) who has been a multiple city victor during his career.

He too has a pedigree of fabulous close up links on either side.

First, there is a 1×2 cross of Brett Lee and Collision who are bred on a reverse cross of Brother Fox and New Tears (balanced).

Next, there is a 2×5 cross of the sisters Sobbing Sal and Hot Show Deb (New Tears-Wee Sal).

Dam Total Upgrade is line bred 3×4 to Malawi's Prince and therein lies yet another wonderful cross.

Malawi's Prince, you see, is bred on an identical cross of Waverly Supreme/Bowetzel to Wee Sal. They are found in the pedigree of many great greyhounds.

AND, the pedigree of last Thursday night's Ipswich winner Jimary Turbo (Zulu Zeus-Jimary Vixen by Cosmic Rumble) also deserves mention.

Bred by Mal and Helen Ross, he ran a slick 30.32 at Ipswich on Gold Cup night when the celebrated winner Wise Misty went 30.40 to take out the Group 3 final.

Mal Ross is a real student of pedigrees, as astute as I have come across. The pedigrees he puts together are well thought out.
Jimary Turbo is no exception.

The real interest, for me, in this pedigree is that it brings in a 3×3 cross of Collision and his half sister Spiritual Rumble and positioned to greatly impact.

Collision is damsire of Zulu Zeus. Jimary Turbo's dam Jimary Vixen is by Cosmic Rumble.

Collision and Cosmic Rumble have been mixed with “mixed” results. Yes, there are Group performers bred on this cross up very close, but quite often it has also backfired to the stage where a degree of unsoundness has been the result.

But, pushing the half relations Collision and Spiritual Rumble back to the third line in the pedigree of Jimary Turbo has produced a classy galloper.

This is why I believe the G1 National Sprint winner, WA-based West On Augie (Fernando Bale-Te Amo by Cosmic Rumble) can make it at stud, especially when crossed with bitches that have Collision in their pedigree.
