SPEED STAR racing takes centre stage at The Meadows on Wednesday afternoon with Group 3 events to take place over each distance.

The hugely popular series will see four two-dog matches races staged with the greyhound which records the fastest time deemed the overall race winner.

Some of the clashes have provided some really interesting betting activity with the match-up between Collinda Patty and Zac’s Entity over the 600 metres the highlight of the program.

RACE 7 – Group 3 Speed Star (725m) Start time: 5.59pm

Box 1 Mepunga Ruby 42.787 watch v Box 3 Major Sacrifice 42.879 watch

Mepunga Ruby is rock bottom odds in betting for this clash and it’s hard to argue. In sublime form coming into the race off a flying 41.44 Sandown Park win last Thursday – the 12th quickest of all time. Expect she continues on her winning way here and is my tip for the series.

Box 1 Five Star 42.829 watch v Box 3 Empress Tears 42.86 watch

Betting is more competitive here but I’m with Five Star which won the most recent Group 3 Speed Star at Sandown in June. Has a class edge and liked the way he worked through his gears in his 42.83 trial Saturday. Empress Tears trained by the master of stayers Rob Britton so can’t be ignored, just expect Five Star to prove too classy.

Box 1 Knicks Bale 42.729 watch v Box 3 Drako Bale 42.784 watch

This pair clashed in consecutive starts at Sandown recently with the ledger squared at one apiece. That’s why it’s $1.90 take your pick in betting. Leaning the way of Drako Bale which has run some fantastic seconds against top opposition at his past two assignments.

Box 1 Rock On Jimmy 42.732 watch v Box 3 Hank The Hustler 42.727 watch

Should be a pretty straight forward watch here for backers of Hank The Hustler, a Group 3 winner at the track. While the pair’s qualifying times are similar their racing performances are world’s apart and expect that shines through in the result here with a dominant win by the fav.

RACE 8 – Group 3 Speed Star (600m) – Start time: 6.44pm

Box 1 Captain Dynamite 34.476 watch v Box 3 Fernando Frank 34.358 watch

Betting is lopsided with Fernando Frank expected to get the job done. Will be suited by the match race format and might surprise a few with what he can run on the clock too. Captain Dynamite isn’t the dog he was but he’s trained by Kel Greenough so you can never totally discard his prospects.

Expect the favourite to win but would have expected them to be closer together in the market.

Box 1 Run Like Jess 34.335 watch v Box 3 Shadow Mist 34.382 watch

Thought the box draw was crucial for this clash. And given Run Like Jess has the inside advantage can’t go past him. Has got back to winning form scoring at his past three and should continue that today. Shadow Mist won’t be a walkover by any means, had he drawn inside would have been much more bullish about his chances though.

Box 1 Zac’s Entity 34.182 watch v Box 3 Collinda Patty 34.117 watch

Clash of the day between the budding stars of the middle distance racing scene. Just a length separated their qualifying times but while Collinda Patty ran her time in the first half, Zac’s Entity did it at the back end. That makes for a sensational last 50 or so metres to this clash. Buckle in.

Box 1 Mepunga Warrior 34.249 watch v Box 3 Gypsy Wyong 34.325 watch

I have plenty of time for both these greyhounds and like an earlier clash I suspect the box draw advantage might see Mepunga Warrior prevail. If Gypsy Wyong begins at her best expect she leads but with the inside running, Mepunga Warrior will get his chance to hunt up down the straight the first time. Betting has both at $1.95 which I think is about right. Flip of the coin for me with both going great guns.

RACE 9 – Group 3 Speed Star (525m) Start time: 7.23pm

Box 1 Chop Scotch 29.868 watch v Box 3 Paddy Wants Pats 29.826 watch

Two newcomers to Speed Star racing which makes for an interesting clash. On times, very little separates the pair across the board so expect it comes down to who can produce their best when it matters. Leaning Chop Scotch with the benefit of the inside draw in what should be a cracking spectacle if two exciting up and comers.

Box 1 Lala Kiwi 29.877 watch v Box 3 Tiggerlong Tonk 29.832 watch

Desperately want to go with the value of the in form Lala Kiwi but I just can’t bring myself to tip against the grand Tiggerlong Tonk. How can you with the way he’s been going? Should be a cracking contest. When a bitch finds her groove like Lala Kiwi has in recent weeks they prove mighty hard to beat and she can do it at both ends. Looking forward to this one.

Box 1 Aston Rupee 29.746 watch v Box 3 Weblec Blazer 29.647 watch

Reigning Speed Star hero Aston Rupee is an odds-on favourite for the series therefore he is rock bottom odds for his match-race assignment. Interesting, given he clashes with top seed Weblec Blazer which has run a flying 29.65 at the circuit. Aston Rupee is one of the fastest dogs on the planet and his poor recent box manners won’t be a big issue here.

Box 1 Aston Cade 29.734 watch v Box 3 Qwara Bale 29.789 watch

Rock bottom odds for Qwara Bale and for punters brave enough to take the $1.09 on offer it should be a pretty easy watch. Loves The Meadows and runs into Aston Cade which to be fair is past his best.
