Record: Deadly Avenger Stuns In Sandgroper

DEADLY Avenger confirmed himself as the king of Cannington following his stunning victory in The Sandgroper on Thursday night.

DEADLY Avenger confirmed himself as the king of Cannington following his stunning victory in The Sandgroper (520m) on Thursday night.

It was a triumphant return to the track for the George Borg-trained chaser after his Group 1 Perth Cup winning effort at the same venue last month.

On this occasion, Deadly Avenger produced a track record run to dominate one of the best fields seen in a WA greyhound race for some time.

From box three, Deadly Avenger launched sweetly to snare the lead ahead of Lakeview Emily, which swept across from seven to land on his shoulder.

Deadly Avenger slipped away after the first turn and he continued to extend his margin throughout the contest.

He sailed over the finish line to win by four lengths in 29.19.

Lakeview Emily held on for second and the late charging Miss Envy grabbed third in the final few strides.

Deadly Avenger racing to victory in The Sandgroper

Deadly Avenger gave back-to-back The Sandgroper wins to slot holder Ladbrokes following their victory with Hector Fawley in last year's event.

Steve Withers, who prepared Deadly Avenger for the Perth Cup and handled the greyhound for the event, gave all the credit for the success to Borg.

"(Deadly Avenger) came over in enormous condition," Withers said.

"You look at the dogs in the field and whoever executed to the best of their ability at the start was possibly going to get their opportunity.

"He did it tonight and he got out in front with clean running and showed exactly what he's made of.

"He's a fantastic dog and he's a son of Tommy Shelby too so we're really proud."

Withers previously trained Tommy Shelby, which won three Group 1s and is now forging a hugely successful stud career.

Deadly Avenger improved his record to 14 wins from 31 starts and he is undefeated in three attempts at Cannington.
