HOT youngster Jungle Deuce goes into Saturday night’s heats of the Ladbrokes Brother Fox Dubbo Cup (516m) with trainer Jack Smith having mixed feelings about the dog’s chances.

The son of Barcia Bale and Serena Fly High, a half-brother to superstar Tommy Shelby, has drawn the four in the first of two heats.

He goes into the race off 14 starts for nine wins and two starts back won at Wentworth Park in a sizzling 29.40.

“He needs to find a bit of box speed,” admitted Jack.

That was obvious going on his latest outing when fourth to Zulu Warlord in a heat of the Group 3 Bob Payne Sprint when well back early after missing the start.

Jungle Deuce then went to Albion Park to trial in preparation for the upcoming Flying Amy Classic and while he went quick time, his first section was poor.

But Jack is buoyed by the fact Jungle Deuce’s past two trials around Dubbo have been a track record 29.21 and a track record equalling 29.27.

The dog has not raced at Dubbo.

Smith is amazed at the quality of the Cup series despite drawing only enough for two heats.

“The Flying Amy is the plan for both Jungle Deuce and our other Dubbo Cup heat runner Irinka Riley,” said Jack.

“If at least one goes great at Dubbo, both will go to Albion Park.”

But he is also aware the Country Championship series is coming up with a rich final to be run at Wentworth Park and a strong lure for both dogs.

Irinka Riley went to Albion Park for a race start on May 15 finishing fifth.

“He didn’t know where he was,” said Jack.

“It will be a different story at Dubbo on Saturday night for both of them. Irinka Riley has won at Dubbo in 29.35.”

He was happy to excuse Jungle Deuce’s trial at Albion Park.

“Young dogs tripping around like that can be put off by new surroundings,” he said.

“I did not give him a stir up before the trial and even though his first section was not great, he still ran time.”

The Brother Fox Dubbo Cup heats are full of quality with Bob Payne Sprint winner Zipping Kyrgios clashing with Zulu Warlord as well as Irinka Riley and record breaking Casual Glance.
