Rising Seven Year Old Eyes Bundy Cup Double

KERRY Perrett says Under Advice was "virtually retired three years ago". On Monday the rising seven year old contests the Bundaberg Cup Final.

KERRY Perrett says Under Advice was “virtually retired three years ago”.

So how come, as a rising seven-year-old, the son of Superman is lining up for his third tilt at the Bundaberg Cup (550m) on Monday afternoon?

“Every now and then, I bring him out of the cupboard and give him another try,” said Kerry.

Under Advice won the Bundy Cup way back in 2017 and then was a finalist in 2018 after drawing wide and enjoying no luck.

His fourth placing behind It's A Rush last Monday in a cup heat was enough to see him through to the rich finale.

It was the grand galloper's first start since January.

Kerry does not sugar coat things and is upfront about Under Advice, a winner of 21 races and placed 23 times for $36,000 in stakes from 62 starts.

“He just wants that lure and if something else looks like getting it … well,” said Kerry.

Which explains why Under Advice has been off since winning a 460m Best 8 at Bundy way back on January 13.

He found himself the subject of the stewards' ire after an indiscretion during running.

“This old dog could have won 40 races and earned $100,000 if he had raced like a regular dog,” said Kerry. "But he's not."

Ipswich Club stalwart Merv Page originally had the dog in his kennel but he moved him on quickly to Kerry's brother Julius.

“Julius won a few with him but then moved him on to me,” said Kerry.

If it had not been for the outbreak of Covid-19, Under Advice would never have been in Bundy last week for his third tilt at the Cup.

“I had planned to trip him around the small country carnivals like Moree, Coonabarabran and the like,” said Kerry.

“But then Covid hit and I had to drop all those plans.

“There is no way I can take him to a track like Ipswich. He gets a bit sneaky there.”

Kerry said with the Cup coming up and the fact he already was planning on taking a few others north from Withcott (at the bottom of the Toowoomba Ranges), he decided to pluck Under Advice “out of the cupboard” and take him too.

“He was a bit short of a gallop for the heats and really he should be kept to 460 metre races these days because he goes much better kept a bit fresh, when he doesn't have much work,” said Kerry.

But Under Advice, seven on December 7 this year, will line up against a field of young stars next Monday, most of which had not even hit the racetrack when he was earning Cup glory back in 2017.

He had his first race start way back In November 2015 when finishing second at Ipswich.

“He's such a beautiful dog,” said Kerry.

“You never hear from him until he decides he needs to go out for a wee.”

Under Advice has tripped about the country winning at Ipswich, Bundaberg, Albion Park and Moree. He has also raced at Capalaba, Rockhampton, Casino, Lismore, Armidale and Coonamble.

He was also a finalist in the 2016 Group 2 Ipswich Auction.

“He needs to draw well in the Cup final to have any chance at all,” said Kerry.

But, Under Advice is among the final field and gets his chance to land a big pay day … even though he is almost seven, an age when just about every greyhound in the world is living a life of luxury.

As they say. Age is just a number. And it rings true with Under Advice.
