RSN Secure Melbourne Cup Favourite For Phoenix

RULING Melbourne Cup favourite Big Energy has been secured by Racing & Sport 927am (RSN) to race in The Phoenix at The Meadows on December 16.

Official news that Big Energy will take his place in the $1 million-to-the-winner showpiece comes on the back of his slashing Melbourne Cup heat success at Sandown Park last Saturday night, stopping the clock in a flying 28.91.

The dashing performance, which will see him start favourite in Saturday night's $650,000-to-the-winner Melbourne Cup Final, came on the back of a thumping victory in the Group 3 Shootout (515m) the start prior.

And while RSN have secured an in-form Big Energy for their The Phoenix assault, they also obtain the services of premier trainers Kel and Jackie Greenough for the $1.65m flagship.

The powerhouse training partnership have annexed the first two editions of The Phoenix with their champion chaser Wow She's Fast when representing slot-holder Sportsbet.

Whether the darling of Australian greyhound racing lines up for a third The Phoenix bid is expected to be decided within the next week.

Winner at 14 of his 28 assignments, Big Energy, which launched his career in WA before being transferred to Victoria, is a winner at The Meadows in a sizzling 29.60.

At his most recent assignment at the circuit he finished fifth to Transponder in the Group 1 Topgun.

Big Energy's The Phoenix tilt will be RSN's second attempt at the race following Mcinerney's fourth placed finish in 2022.

News of Big Energy's guaranteed place in the field saw bookmakers install him as a $3.80 equal favourite with Alpha Zulu.

Postman Pat is on the next line at $4 ahead of Schillaci at $7.
