Stud Prospect Sammy Set For Healesville Onslaught

NORTHERN Rivers dog man John Dart is gearing up for what he hopes could be an onslaught in the next year or so with his star sprinter.

NORTHERN Rivers dog man John Dart is gearing up for what he hopes could be an onslaught in the next year or so.

Dart, and his family, bred and own Typhoon Sammy (Aston Dee Bee-Zabaleta) which runs off box six for trainer Jason Thompson in a heat of the Healesville Cup (350m) on Sunday.

He comes into the race off five wins in his past six starts including a scorching 19.51 at Capalaba when in Dart's kennel during June and July.

But Dart and Thompson are preparing the dog for a stud career and Dart says he has already had numerous approaches from broodbitch owners to use him.

FIELDS AND FORM HEALESVILLE SUNDAY

“While he was at home with us, we got his DNA done,” he said.

“Jason will get all the other tests done when the time comes.

“I think he is keen to stand him himself.”

Typhoon Sammy is the winner of 34 races and $216,000 and needs only one more Victorian provincial cup victory to earn a $50,000 bonus.

Thompson has planned the dog's assault on the Healesville Cup with precision.

“Jason gave him a run at Healesville before he came home for The Thunderbolt series at Grafton,” said Dart. “He ran a nice second to Hill Top Jonnie.

“Jason took him back for a slip at Healesville on Tuesday in preparation for Sunday's heat.”

Dart said he and Thompson had not talked about who would stand the dog at stud, but he said a number of other studs had approached him for the dog.

“Plans for his racing future will be made after he runs at Healesville,” said Dart.

“But Jason said just the other day his big target is the Hobart 1000.”

Typhoon Sammy has won the Group 2 Traralgon Cup and Horsham Cup and is a track record breaker.

“He is a fantastic chaser too, a great looking dog and with a pedigree to suit,” said Dart.

“Yes, we might be biased, but he's got everything to make him a stud success.”

Typhoon Sammy faces tough opposition from Nicholson Bale, Dynamic Prince and Aston Exceed.

Five heats of the Cup will be run on Sunday with stars like Quinlan Bale, Sacred Stance, Panama Canal, Zigzag Cabang, Ferdinand Boy, Unleash Collinda, Paua Of Buddy, Compliance and Into The Dark heading to the straight track.
