Satoshi Sends Message In Vince Curry Opener

WHILE the all-conquering Tom Tzouvelis kennel might have dominated the first Vince Curry round, Ben McCarthy produced a potential star in Satoshi.

WHILE the all-conquering Tom Tzouvelis kennel might have dominated the first round of heats of the time-honoured Group 3 Vince Curry Maiden at Ipswich on Saturday night, youthful trainer Ben McCarthy produced a potential star in Satoshi.

The son of Jungle Deuce and Dynamite Lucy ran a flying 30.63 to win his heat by five lengths as the $1.70 favourite on debut.

Ben is the son of leading dog man, John McCarthy, who bred the litter.

And Ben has given Satoshi the kennel name of Macca after his dad … "just to rub it in a bit".

John got Dynamite Lucy from Ray and Mary Burman after a fine racing career and then later got Smart Lilly from the Burmans as a broodbitch for Ben.

"Dynamite Lucy had one pup by Tommy Shelby, so dad put her to Tommy's half-brother and got this litter," McCarthy said.

"Right from when he was educated and started trialling he has shown something extra.

"The first time he went 431 metres at Ipswich he trialled 24.80. I rang dad on the way home to tell him and I could not stop laughing.

"Dad said ‘it must be good'."

After that Ben mapped out a plan to run Satoshi in the Vince Curry series.

"He went 30.60 the first time he trialled over 520 metres," McCarthy said.

But, Satoshi does have a concern.

"He stands up in the boxes," he added.

"We have worked so hard to get him to get down in the boxes, but it hasn't worked yet.

"We will keep running him out of the boxes behind the drag lure and will head to Capalaba for trials after the Vince Curry."

Ben named his dog after Japanese developer Satoshi Nakamoto who invented Bitcoin.

While Satoshi gave Ben his first round Vince Curry highlight, Tom Tzouivelis was dominant.

He landed five of the seven heat winners. They are:

Zipping Dalila (SH Avatar-Zipping Samara) who downed littermate Zipping Viper in 30.62.

Zipping Rove who ran 31.02 to defeat Scotch On Ice.

Zipping Marcel who ran 30.76 beating Apex.

Zipping Vivid winning a heat of the Vince Curry on Saturday night

Zipping Vivid who ran 30.88 beating Chattering.

Zipping Sweeny in a flying 30.58, the best of the heats, over Moet Magic.

All of the Tzouvelis winners are from the same SH Avatar-Zipping Samara litter bred by the Hallinan family.

Zipping Samara is the mother of Zipping Kai, the winner late last year of the G1 Hume Cup at The Meadows.

Tony Zammit prepared the other Vince Curry heat winner, Tawny Tears (Goodesy-Empress Tears) in 31.90 beating Shadow Catcher.

Tzouvelis started nine in the heats and eight have qualified for next week's second round.

Jeff Crawford qualified five for the semis.
