Sennachie's Stud Stocks Continue To Rise

GROUP 1 trainer Mick Zammit, these days relegated to kennel "strapper" for wife Selena, is as good a judge of greyhounds as anyone in the country.

GROUP 1 trainer Mick Zammit, these days relegated to kennel “strapper” for his trainer wife Selena, is as good a judge of greyhounds as anyone in the country.

So when Mick's mother-in-law Lillian Jones decided a short time ago to breed with her Spring Gun-Just Itchin' bitch Kealoah it was time for Mick to step up and make a point.

The bitch had won 12 races during her long career, came from a fabulous litter which included Group class Spring Time Girl, and earned $84,000 in stakes.

Mick insisted Kealoah be mated to superstar Sennachie, the Fernando Bale-Rhonda Rocks dog which had swept aside Group 1s and track records like it was second nature.

Mick, surprisingly, got no argument from his mother-in-law or his wife. That's because Sennachie had been a Zammit-kennel occupant during his highly successful raids on Albion Park.

The Zammits knew and loved Sennachie.

“We could have sold a hundred of those pups,” said Mick.

“It was a no brainer to send the bitch there. We know first-hand just what a wonderful nature Sennachie had. If he passes on that trait alone, it will be something.

“If his racetrack ability goes with it … wow.”

Sennachie (18 wins, $704,000) has been hugely popular since retiring to stud standing with his trainer Steve White in Victoria.

“His oldest pups are rising nine months old and everything about them is fantastic,” said Steve.

“He has had 76 bitches to date and they are all producing good sized pups.

“There are no little pups in this lot.”

White said the latest booking is for star Queensland bitch Champagne Sally the four time Group 1 finalist and multiple track record breaker.

“Queensland breeders have been very strong for him which is only natural considering what he did up there,” said Steve.

“But, we are also getting lots of bitches for him from NSW and considering he never even raced there, it is an achievement.”

White said semen quality is high from the dog and he is producing a range of colours in his litters.

“Yes we get some blacks, but most of his pups are a variety of colours which is also making breeders happy,” he said.

“And, looking at the crosses he has had with bitches, there are 35 different sirelines among the bitches he has mated.

“It will be very interesting to see what comes of all that diversity.

“Things are looking good for him. He is going to get his chance at stud.”

Leading breeders like Dave Hobby, Steve Williams, Linda Britton, Charmaine Field, Simon Mallia, Mark Moroney, Evelyn Harris, Bob Littlefield, Toby Weekes, Pauline Moran and the dog's owner Kirin Corby are just some names to have used Sennachie.

It makes for a successful stud career for such a wonderful race dog.
