GROUP 2 Queensland Derby winner and Group 1 finalist Sentenced has broken a hock and will be sidelined for six months.

Breeder and owner Steve Williams said on the weekend that the home-bred son of Jury-Velocity Spice had suffered breaks to the hock region in a slip at Ipswich on Thursday.

“We rushed him off to Jason Beck's vet surgery and the dog underwent two different operations,” said Steve of the Tony Brett-trained dog.

“There is a slight glimmer of hope that he could come back to racing but he will certainly need at least six months to recover.

“We are hopeful more than confident.”

Williams said Brett had told him the dog was “absolutely flying” during this preparation.

“He'd come back much better than what he was,” said Steve.

Sentenced won the Group 2 Queensland Derby at Albion Park in December after running 29.63 to win his heat in sensational fashion.

He then made the Group 3 Golden Ticket and then the Group 1 Gold Bullion finals.

He was also invited to the Group 1 Topgun but had to be scratched in the race lead up.
