Sky's The Limit For Record Breaking Like Wildfire

LIKE Wildfire confirmed his standing as Australia's most exciting staying prospect with a stunning track record run at Gosford on Tuesday night.

The Michael Ivers-trained phenom carved out a remarkable 33.96s for the 603 metre journey to score by 14 lengths and shave 3 ½ lengths off the previous 34.21s time-standard shared by Blue Moon Rising and Punter's Bandit.

The powerhouse display extended Like Wildfire's career record to four wins from as many starts boasting an aggregated winning margin of almost 30 lengths.

"The best part of last night's win was seeing him begin like he did," Ivers said.

"He broke nine seconds for the first sectional and his run home time was just remarkable. He's showing me he's already looking for 700 metres but I'll take him along slowly and just let him learn his craft.

"If you push too hard too early, that's when things go wrong."

In breaking the 603 metre track record, Like Wildfire joins his three-time Group 1 winning uncle Space Star as a record breaker at the central coast circuit.

Back in 2014, Space Star ran 34.21 at the new defunct 600 metre starting distance in one of three track records held by the former gifted stayer.

Immediate plans for Like Wildfire include a 600 metre test at The Gardens while a tilt at the National Distance Championships in August may well be on the agenda.

Ivers is no stranger to National Distance glory, winning the showpiece event with Kobble Creek back in 1999 and Tornado Tears in 2018.

"That's a target if he continues the way he is," Ivers said.

"For now it's just one foot in front of another and bring him along slowly and let him find his way."

While Like Wildfire is creating huge hype in NSW, litter-brothers Trooper Tears and Trapper Tears continue to make a name for themselves in Victoria.

Between the duo they are already responsible for 16 race wins and $300,000 in prizemoney.
