Smooth Plane Sets Ipswich Gold Cup Pace
NO dog in training deserves a G1 more than Smooth Plane and he put in his claim for an Ipswich Gold Cup win with a devastating heat win on Thursday.
NO dog in training deserves a Group 1 victory more than Victorian Smooth Plane and the Tom Dailly-trained sprinter put in his claim for an Ipswich Gold Cup win with a devastating heat win on Thursday night.
Smooth Plane (Vulturi-Smooth Bourbski) swept around his rival on the home turn and raced to a length and three-quarter victory in 30.13 to defeat Trooper Tears.
It is Smooth Plane's fifth Group 1 final berth.
He has been second in the National Sprint and a finalist in the Brisbane Cup, Silver Chief, Harrison-Dawson and now the Ipswich Gold Cup.
He has made the finals of 10 Group or Listed races.
"He is just a really nice dog who always puts in," said kennel spokesman George Dailly.
"He's a great chasing dog."
Smooth Plane had not seen Ipswich before his heat victory on Thursday night.
He was flown north on Tuesday to be handled by local trainer Greg Brennan and was sent back to his home kennel on Friday.
"We'll do the same next week," said George. "Send him up on Tuesday to settle in.
"We always bring them home after a heat run."
The Dailly kennel is naturally disappointed with Smooth Plane's box five draw for the final.
"We have to expect a poor draw for a final after drawing the red in the heat," George said.
Smooth Plane is bred to stay and George said he could possibly have a distance campaign later in his career.
"We are not 100 percent confident he will run out a strong 700 metres," George added.
"He's bred to stay. His sire was a 700 metre dog and the damline is all Group strength."
On a night of fantastic racing, other heats of the Cup went to:
Jedda Cutlack's Duffman used his one box to perfection to win his heat in 30.24 beating John "JMac" McCarthy's Mossy Boots.
Tom Tzouvelis' Autumn Storm ran 30.32 to down Super Scrub.
Warren Nicholls' flying Kia Kaha led throughout to win her heat in 30.36 beating Johnny No Ice.
Ray Burman's outsider Big Boy Bentley stormed home to win in 30.40 over Zephyr.
Pam and John Field, devoted Brisbane Lions fans and fresh from the AFL grand final victory, landed a Cup heat with More Than Money in 30.55 beating Cluster.
Adam Macintosh's Golden Bear ran down Simply Express to win his heat in 30.69.
G1 Ipswich Gold Cup (in box draw order): 1 Big Boy Bentley, 2 Kia Kaha, 3 Golden Bear, 4 Duffman, 5 Smooth Plane, 6 Trooper Tears, 7 Autumn Storm, 8 More Than Money, Res: 9 Mossy Boots, 10 Super Scrub.
