Sprint Sensation Vamoose's Meteoric Rise No Fluke

THERE is seemingly no stopping New South Wales greyhound racing’s newest sprinting sensation, the hugely talented and reliable Vamoose.

THERE is seemingly no stopping NSW greyhound racing's newest sprint sensation Vamoose.

At Gosford on Tuesday night the Sue Smith-trained star made it 17 wins from 35 starts with another perfect demonstration of sustained speed, stopping the clock in a flying 21.87 for the 388 metre journey.

The five length romp continued a run of form which has seen the son of Fernando Bale and grand producer Blue Thunda win nine of his past 11 appearances.

On each occasion the flashy white and blue powerhouse has begun brilliantly, a trait he has not only inherited from his champion sire but also a female line renowned for producing immensely talented speedsters.

"He'd have to be the fastest sprinter in NSW wouldn't he?" said proud Branxton owner-breeder Sue Smith.

"He's an absolute pleasure to have. At home he's the most relaxed dog you'd find, nothing fazes him at all. But when he gets to the track he's just all business.

All business … Vamoose in full flight

"At about nine months he stood out of the pack and from when we started working him he just kept on improving."

While immensely talented, Vamoose is proving equally versatile, capable of winning from 300m to 520m without a misstep.

"Over the 500 he's run 29.80 at Wentworth Park and 29.40 at Gosford and The Gardens so he can run it," Smith pointed out.

"But that last little bit against the real top dogs in town sees him out. But his 500 metre form is very good overall."

While still six months away, Smith has a tilt at June's The Thunderbolt – the world's richest short-course race at Grafton – in the back of her mind.

"If he's up and going still that's a race I'd love to have a go at with him," Smith added.

"He went in the race last year but it was a bit too soon for him. A lot can happen in that time so we'll just see what happens.

"I wish there were more one-turn big races for him here in NSW like they seem to have in Victoria. They'd be ideal for him those country cups down there."

When Vamoose raced away for victory in the Ladbrokes Christmas Dash (280m) at Wentworth Park recently he posted a fast 15.82 for the trip.

The Wentworth Park track record is held by Laurie's Flyer at 15.72, the 28-time winner a full older brother to Vamoose, illustrating the remarkable production line the family is responsible for.

Blue Thunda's four litters to race have won an incredible 233 races from 689 starters at a strike-rate of 34 per cent, including Blue Bronte which retired with 34 brilliant short-course wins from 42 starts.

"The line just continues to throw fast beginners with great speed," Smith added.

"John (Miles) and I have been lucky to race some great dogs through this line.

“There's a few nice Bernardo x Blue Sapphire (ex Blue Thunda) pups racing at the moment and Blue Bronte has a litter of pups recently whelped to Aston Rupee as well."

Where Vamoose bobs up next Smith isn't entirely sure but when he does he'll do so with a growing fan base watching and cheering on.
