Stagg On Cloud Nine After Dream Cup Result

DARCY Dakota has helped trainer Kerry Stagg to one of the biggest wins of his career, claiming the Group 3 Murray Bridge Cup on Sunday afternoon.

DARCY Dakota has helped trainer Kerry Stagg to one of the biggest wins of his career, claiming the Group 3 Murray Bridge Cup (455m) on Sunday.

The blue dog out of the standout Shima Shine x Dakota Roxy litter produced an excellent run from box three, going 25.26 to take out the 455m feature event.

In a hot field, Darcy Dakota showed plenty of muster around the turn to pinch a winning break and hold off the Mount Gambier pair of Bourne Model for Dave Peckham and Compton Gold for Tracie Price who rounded out the podium.

"He's been jumping terrible, but today we tried something different with him and he jumped okay and got the room early," trainer Kerry Stagg said.

"He's a brilliant, very fast dog if he gets a bit of room early and he's been getting a little bit stronger.

"So, we are very pleased, he put his best paw forward this week and it was a great run."

The Group 3 success was win number 21 for Darcy Dakota and goes with 13 placings from 37 starts, but Sunday's win was the biggest of his young career.

It was a second Group 3 success for the Shima Shine x Dakota Roxy litter with Dakota Rylen winning the Group 3 Brian Johnstone final in November while Dakota Ava was also in Sunday's final.

Stagg was full of praise for his team, who helped with the litter who have won nearly $200,000 in prizemoney across their racing careers.

"You do a lot of work, a lot of rearing and we do it all ourselves, with the team and I," Stagg said.

"It's a team effort, they've been run around the paddocks all their life, and that makes them grow up strong and good for racing."

The Group 3 Mount Gambier Cup in early April looks set to be the next target for Stagg, with up to $10,000 in bonuses on offer with $5000 if the same greyhound and $5000 if the same trainer can win both features.

"I might think about Mount Gambier, he is probably not quite a 512m dog just yet," Stagg said.

"Look, maybe we will have  a look at Mount Gambier and take a few others with us as well."

The Murray Bridge Cup meeting was run in a late morning time slot due to South Australia's warm weather with temperatures set to hit the high 30's by late afternoon.

It was a strong supporting program with the impressive Daintree Shady for Lauren Harris taking out the Cup Consolation.

Victa Tara won the sprint feature over the 395m journey for Ron Schadow while Linkin Girl was an excellent winner in the distance feature over the 680m journey.

There were also two races run down the straight track to start the meeting, which is always a highlight for the strong on-course crowd.
