Sunset Frazier To Fly Local Flag In Sandgroper

PREMIER WA trainer Dave Hobby will need to stave off an all Victorian contingent if he’s to secure the first two editions of the $600,000 The Sandgroper.

PREMIER WA trainer Dave Hobby will need to stave off an all Victorian contingent if he's to secure the first two editions of the $600,000 TABtouch The Sandgroper (520m).

Barring anything unforeseen, the Hobby-trained Sunset Frazier will race for slot holder Aaron Bain Racing & Summit Bloodstock in the $300,000-to-the-winner invitation at Cannington on April 18.

Hobby won the inaugural The Sandgroper last year with his sensational sprinter Crumble Monelli which defeated a crack field of interstate raiders including Wow She's Fast, Fernando Mick and Victa Damian.

And if Hobby is to go back-to-back in the greyhound leg of the hugely popular Western Trilogy – the world's only tri-code slot series – it appears he'll need to overcome no less than seven Victorian rivals.

Hector Fawley (Ladbrokes), Morton (TABtouch), Trooper Tears (Total Container Solutions / Team Britton), Mepunga Smokey (RAM Racing), Explicit (Punters HQ) and Big Energy (Mintbet) all hail from Victoria while Sportsbet, yet to formally announce their runner, look poised to secure fellow Victorian Fernando Phil.

"It's a bit disappointing that there hasn't been more support for the locals so it looks like it's going to be just us against the east," Hobby said.

"We've still got a bit of time but as things are right now Sunset Frazier will run in the slot.

"Aaron Bain contacted me a while back asking if one of our dogs could run in the slot and by the end of it I actually bought into half of the slot.

"At least with him there the locals will have something to cheer for."

Winner at eight of his 14 appearances with a further four placings, recent Perth Cup finalist Sunset Frazier, a homebred son of Sunset Spitfire and Sunset Octavia, has demonstrated tremendous ability in his brief career to date.

Boasting a personal best Cannington first section of 5.31, it's up the back where the prodigious talent has done his most brilliant work, running a sectional record 18.01.

"He's a couple of lengths quicker than Crumble Monelli through the first two splits with probably the same kind of run home – for now anyway," Hobby said.

"When Sunset Spitfire went 18.08 up the back as a pup that was special so for his son to shave a length off that really is something.

"But he's had a shocking run with box draws. In all his starts he's drawn inside box 4 once. In this kind of class you just can't keep giving that kind of advantage away.

"It's got to turn around soon. I'd love to see him out of the red in The Sandgroper.”

Sunset Frazier is currently $10 for The Sandgroper with favouritism with boom sprinter Explicit from the Jason Thompson kennel at $2.70.

Big Energy and Morton sit on the second line of markets at $5.
