Sunset Frazier To Get Off To Stud Flyer

The stud career of Sunset Frazier, while recovering from injury, is off to a flyer, serving a high quality, well bred brood.

DARREN Puleio has bred a decent dog or two in his day.

Try Poke The Bear, his brother Out Of Range, and their half-brother Hooked On Scotch just to name a trio of Group 1 stars.

So when Darren jumped in to grab semen for Sunset Frazier (Sunset Spitfire-Sunset Octavia) for his former Group race bitch American Queen, it said something about what he thinks of the WA-bred speedster.

Sunset Frazier is in a brief stud career while recovering from an injury he picked up after running in The Phoenix.

"American Queen has just come on season and I was really wanting to breed with her because of her quality as a stayer," Puleio said.

"Her bloodlines, of course, are pretty well known."

American Queen, by Superior Panama, is from the Puleio family's legend broodbitch Nicki Fields, the dam of the above mentioned trio of Group 1 winners Poke The Bear, Out Of Range and Hooked On Scotch.

Her daughters are already producing Group stars.

"I made a phone call or two about the potential match of Sunset Frazier and American Queen, like what I was told, rang Dave Hobby (his breeder) had a chat, and signed the deal to mate her straight away," he added.

American Queen was third in a G3 Vic-Bred maiden series at The Meadows and a finalist in the G2 McKenna Memorial.

Her litter brother, Home Brew, finished third in the G1 Sale Cup behind Drill Sergeant.

"I very much liked the double of Collision in Sunset Frazier's pedigree, and the fact he is bred on the proven Fabregas and Fernando Bale cross," he added.

"That Fernando Bale influence in his damline is perfect for my Nicki Fields bitch to recreate Poke The Bear and Out Of Range and their great littermates.

"But, how can you fault Sunset Frazier's race career and the absolute blinding pace he has always shown.

"Those record sectionals he can run look fabulous for a strong staying bitch."

The winner of the G2 Black Top, Sunset Frazier has also been second in The Sandgroper, G2 WA Derby, third in the Million Dollar Chase, G1 Flying Amy Classic and a finalist in the G1 Perth Cup, G1 Melbourne Cup and the G1 The Phoenix.
