WHEN the band gets back together, great things happen.

And that's what hall of fame trainer Tony Zammit and owner Peter Bellamy are hoping.

The combination behind such greats as Surf Lorian and Barrio Babe, line up with first starter Moreton Magic (My Redeemer-Preferred Lies) in a heat of the Dave Brett Memorial Maiden (520m) at Albion Park on Wednesday.

“I have to hand it to Tony, he is training fantastic,” said Bellamy. “He has a boutique kennel these days but they are all flying.

“I rang him after Moreton Magic and her litter sister, Deemed A Liar, were broken in and asked if he would take them.

“It's great to be back with the kennel.”

Moreton Magic has trialled 30.50 in preparation for her debut start but both Zammit and Bellamy believe she is a bitch which will improve with racing and age.

“She came on season and we had to hold her back a bit,” said Bellamy. “It's been a bit of a rush to get her ready for this race.

“The hope is if she can get to the rails early. She is a lovely big bitch and very strong.”

Bellamy bought Moreton Magic and Deemed A Liar (5 starts, 3 wins) from Tony Raeburn and Bianca Whitford as pups.

“Claude Dacey reared them and educated them and did a wonderful job,” said Peter.

Moreton Magic has drawn the four box.

Bellamy remembered the day his former champ Surf Lorian made his debut.

“I was on a golfing holiday in Asia and got a phone call from Tony (Zammit),” said Peter.

“Tony had taken him to Singleton for a big maiden coming up. He trialled 20.68 when the track record was 20.90.

“Mick Abbott was playing golf with me at that very moment and I asked him if 20.68 was a hot run at Singleton.

“Mick said it had to be 21.68 because no dog could run that fast. The 20.68 was right and we were all on him in the heat and he bolted in.

“Unfortunately he slipped on the mat coming out in the final and was beaten.

“He went on to be a superstar breaking records everywhere and was such a great sire.”

Hot chance in the Dave Brett Memorial series is Reg Gardoll's Starline Express (Fernando Bale-Spooky Sensation) which  is coming off a second to Sal's Blue Boy in Casino's prestigious Pop Northfield Maiden Final late in October.
