Thompson Says Explicit ‘As Good As We've Had”

JASON Thompson has contained himself until now ... with Explicit's track record Temora run elevating the group 1 star to another level.

JASON Thompson has contained himself until now about superstar sprinter Explicit.

"He is as good as we've ever had," Thompson declared. "And he could be the very best we've ever had."

Explicit on Wednesday afternoon broke the week-old Temora track record for 457m running 25.16 when winning the regional final of the Million Dollar Chase.

The $2.20 favourite, he downed a gallant Heidi McGraw which only last week had eclipsed champion She's A Pearl's 25.38 track record when she ran 25.29.

Irinka Daniel was third and that trio will now head to the semi-finals of the MDC at Wentworth Park on October 12.

"He went terrific," said Jason. "I have purposely not wanted to say he's the best we've ever had until now. I always like the dogs to do their own talking.

"He's done that now."

Thompson, who has been associated with many of the great champions to have raced throughout the country, was in awe of Explicit (Bernardo-Brueghelino).

"He still didn't get the start right today," Jason said.

"But, he is a take no prisoners sort of dog and he did it coming out of box five."

Explicit was awesome.

He began fairly, but mustered pace quickly and then burst clear of the field in the back straight to set up his victory. Heidi McGraw burst out of the pack and chased him hard to the line but was never going to pick him up.

Thompson will now take Explicit home with the Million Dollar Chase the aim ahead of a big Melbourne campaign.

"He may not race again before the semis," said Jason. "But, if he does it will be only for one race at home in Victoria.

"I will give him a look at the Wenty track about 10 days before the semis. He may be our only Million Dollar Chase runner. Flying Zulu is in at The Meadows on Saturday night and he could be going to Wenty as well.

"There is the Adelaide Cup and also a number of big races coming up in Victoria so the rest of the team will concentrate on those."

Thompson said Explicit could retire at the end of the year.

"He's won a Group 1, two Group 2s and one Group 3 so he is a stud dog already," he said.

"He's got all the right qualities of a successful stud dog.

"And, he is the most beautiful dog there is. There is not one thing you could not like about the dog."

The Temora Regional Final took his record to 29 starts for 21 wins and five placings with earnings of $397,000.
