IT is the calm before the storm at The Meadows on Monday night with the running of the Group 1 Hume Cup (600m) and Group 3 Silver Bullet (525m).

The Melbourne Cup-eve program will see 12 races run and won with the feature of the night – the Hume Cup – race eight on the card, set to go at 9.15pm.

FIELDS AND FORM THE MEADOWS MONDAY NIGHT

Best Bets

RACE 1 NUMBER 4 – SUBSTANTIAL

Strong race to begin the program where I’m confident Substantial can get punters off on the right note. Yet to score in five The Meadows starts but comes into this off two top placings since scoring at Shepparton in a fast 25.03. Box manners have improved since returning from a break and with a clean beginning here expect the $5 will look very appealing.

RACE 6 NUMBER 3 – BAROOGA SMOKE

Class animal that is right up to winning the Group 3 Silver Bullet. Has been in sublime form, his six most recent starts returning two wins and four placings. Has missed a place just once in seven The Meadows starts and with a clean beginning looks drawn to give this a real shake at around the $4 quote.

RACE 9 NUMBER 1 – OSPREY ROSE

On face value was slightly disappointing last start but from the rails draw prepared to give her a chance to redeem herself in this hardy field. Geelong Oaks winner in dashing style four starts back with the benefit of the inside draw only needs to run up to her slick 29.94 victory two wins back to score again.

Best Value

RACE 4 NUMBER 4 – WAR DRUM EXPRESS

Was never in the mix at Sandown last Thursday but in the small field tonight suspect this enigmatic fella can run a race at odds. Just the five going around and while the favourite Casus Beli is clearly the one to beat, if War Drum Express puts his best foot forward he can figure at odds.
