Topgun Heartbreak: Super Estrella Scratched

SUPER Estrella has been scratched from Saturday night's Group 1 Topgun Stayers at The Meadows for which she was the raging hot odds on favourite.

SUPERSTAR stayer Super Estrella has been scratched from Saturday night's Group 1 Topgun Stayers (725m) at The Meadows for which she was the raging hot odds on favourite.

And trainer Dave Smith said today breeder and owner Michael Jones is contemplating her retirement.

Super Estrella (Fernando Bale-Esparza) has strained her off-side groin.

Smith believes the bitch did it while trialling at Wentworth Park last Saturday night in preparation for the Topgun Stayers.

“I've been working on it, but there is no way she would be going into the race 100 percent,” said Smith.

“I never put any of my dogs around unless they are 100 percent.

“And I love Super Estrella too much to consider doing that … and I don't even own her.”

Super Estrella has not started since winning at Wentworth Park on October 15 but she was going into the Topgun Stayers off recent form that included wins in the Group 1 National Distance Championship, Group 2 Sydney Cup and a Wentworth Park track record.

If the Jones family does retire her, she will finish with career stats of 70 starts for 33 wins and 28 placings for $454,000 in prizemoney.

First reserve Moraine Suzie will make her way into the Topgun field, with her box to be finalised upon close of scratchings.
Super Estrella's scratching has thrown the race wide open with many expecting the star NSW stayer to make light work of the invitational event.
