Trainers Revel In Shock Jeff Jones Trophy Gift
THE Jay Is Jay phenomenon continues to impact greyhound racing and that was on show in the Jeff Jones Trophy (366m) at Capalaba on Sunday.
THE Jay Is Jay phenomenon continues to impact greyhound racing and that was never more evident than when the Jeff Jones Trophy (366m) was run at Capalaba on Sunday.
Jeff Jones' wife Lillian and daughter Selena Zammit were at Capalaba with a surprise bonus for all those finalists in the 5th Grade series.
The race was won by the Tom Tzouvelis-trained I'm Old School in 19.89 beating Sparks Will Fly and Darby Display.
Racing Queensland allocated $3700 for the final with the placegetters getting $2275, $700, $350 and $175.
But Lillian asked that all seven runners in the final (one was scratched) return to the presentation area.
Lillian then presented each finalist with an envelope, a picture of Jeff Jones on the front, containing that same prizemoney again, giving all finalists double what they would have earned.
Mother and daughter explained they wanted to match Racing Queensland's commitment to Jeff's race but to also honour what Jay Is Jay and his Sennachie-Kealoah littermates have done for the family.
Jeff Jones bought and originally trained Kealoah before his death. The bitch was transferred to Lillian and then Selena took over her training.
The litter has won 91 races and $2.07 million.
Million Dollar Chase winner and Albion Park track record holder Jay Is Jay is the obvious standout.
