BETWEEN training luminaries Jason Thompson and Tony Brett they’re responsible for nine of the past 18 Brisbane Cup winners.
It’s a truly remarkable feat from the two champion trainers which have now had a stranglehold on Brisbane’s flagship event for the best part of two decades.
The most recent addition to that list is Equalizer following his powerhouse performance in the Group 1 showpiece at Albion Park on Thursday night.
Trained by Jason Thompson, Equalizer has been in the care of Tony Brett in recent weeks for his Brisbane Cup quest.
It’s a strategy Thompson first adopted in 2019 when Black Opium finished second to Sennachie before returning last year to annex the Brisbane Cup in blistering fashion.
Thursday night’s stunning Group 1 win in a flying 29.52 was Equalizer’s 20th career victory from a 46 start career.
And while his record is nothing at all to sneeze at, the son of Kc And All and Captivating is only now beginning to fulfil his true potential.
Boasting immense talent since he first graced the track, Equalizer has been on the cusp of the top echelon of sprinters for quite a while now.
But Thursday night’s Group 1 win now solidifies his standing in that space.
This time last year it was Equalizer’s older half-sister Black Opium which was taking Brisbane by storm.
And in following in her footsteps the regally bred sprinter, owned by Bill and Serg Buccilli, has taken a giant leap towards cementing a stud career.
Tipping the scales at 37 kilos, Equalizer has all the ingredients to be an attractive proposition in the breeding barn when the time comes.
What the immediate future holds will be interesting but it could just be that his first interstate assignment will be the making of him.
If it is expect it not be his last Group 1 success.
