Training Newcomer Ben Davey Enjoys Dream Start

TWO wins in as many weeks for training newcomer Ben Davey has certainly brought about a change of heart for Ben's partner Amber Sherlock.

TWO wins in as many weeks for training newcomer Ben Davey has certainly brought about an instant change of heart for Ben's partner Amber Sherlock.

Ben's first venture into greyhound training landed wins with royally bred Case Dismissed (Sennachie-Bombshell Bandit) at Bundaberg in the past two weeks.

Case Dismissed, purchased by Davey from the Canya Complex, won a maiden over 460m in 26.64 on August 14 and yesterday (Monday) improved further to land a Novice in 26.50.

“Amber was a bit wary about us getting into greyhound training thinking we had plenty on our plate already,” Davey said.

“But this morning she was out of bed and helping me walk the dogs and feed them. How things have changed. For the better.”

Ben, Amber and five-month old son Billy live on acreage at South Kolan just 20 minutes outside Bundaberg.

Ben got interested in greyhound racing a year ago and decided to head to the local track.

“I sat next to Eric Conroy and started chatting to him all day about getting into dogs,” said Ben.

“It all led from there really.”

When the time came recently for Ben to get his own dog to train, he answered a greyhound-data advert for a litter sister to Case Dismissed.

“She was a little higher than I wanted to pay, but her brother (Case Dismissed) was for sale for $10,000 from Jessica Windiate in NSW and I decided to buy him.”

Ben changed a few things around at his South Kolan property to allow the introduction of a greyhound and he has since added two more to the kennel.

“I started putting him up the straight and he was getting fit and better each time,” said Ben, a disability support worker.

The Davey family all smiles after the win by Case Dismissed

“I had to go to Brisbane for work and took him with me for a 331 metre trial at Albion Park and he went 19.44 which I was very happy with.”

Back to Bundy, Case Dismissed went 27.34 at his first 460m trial and Ben was disappointed.

“But, I took him back the next week and he improved to 26.88 and then went 26.50 so I decided not to wait for the Maiden 1000 heats and put him straight in,” he said.

Case Dismissed won by almost five lengths in 26.64 and on Monday won again by two lengths in 26.50.

“He is such a sensible dog and already shows a lot of track sense,” said Ben.

“But, he does his best when he has something in against him as I found out in those early trials.”

Case Dismissed's dam Bombshell Bandit was third in a G3 Christmas Gift at Wentworth Park and  a finalist in the G1 Golden Easter Egg and G3 Canberra Cup, and a litter brother to G1 winner Crash Bandicoot.

Their dam, J's Robin, was a superstar in the US.

Bombshell Bandit is already the dam of Group 1 star and track record breaker Bandit Ned.
