Tralee Lola Races Away For Coonamble Gold

THE Mel Mabbott-trained Tralee Lola has made full use of a late call-up to annex the Gold Maiden (305m) at Coonamble on Monday.

THE Mel Mabbott-trained Tralee Lola has made full use of a late call-up to annex the Ladbrokes Gold Maiden Final (305m) on a huge card of racing at Coonamble on Monday.

After finishing second to Shearwater Inn in her heat on debut Saturday, Mabbott had set her sights on victory in the $2,500-to-the-winner Hypo Magic Silver Final (305m) with the well-bred daughter of Ando's Mac.

But following the scratching in the Gold Final of impressive heat winner Bobby Ville, Tralee Lola booked a place in the $15,000-to-the-winner decider, and didn't let her backers down, getting the better of So Delirious in the drive to the line to score by three-quarters-of-a-length in 17.68.

Finishing third was Spring Bluey another 2 1/2 lengths away.

Just 18 months of age, Tralee Lola is out of gifted dam Zipping Sookie, with this litter to Ando's Mac following the great early deeds of her offspring from her first litter by Mepunga Blazer, which includes Charlm Dancer (9 wins), Charlm Outlaw (7 wins) and Charlm Bullet (5 wins) just to name a few.

Such was the even nature of the rich finale, less than three lengths separated each of the eight heat winners on the clock, including the ultimate winner Tralee Lola, posting the quickest second in the qualifiers.

That led to a record $20k plus pool in Sunday's Calcutta staged at the Coonamble Bowling Club.

As well as landing the carnival major, Mabbott also took the spoils in the Rambet Cup (305m), securing the $3,000-to-the-winner finale with Irish Actor in a slick 17.58.

On a huge day of feature race finals action to cap off another hugely successful carnival, the Sandown GRC Coonamble Cup (405m) was taken out by the Pat Parrelli-trained Devereux by 4 ¾ lengths in 23.29.

The Garrards Horse & Hound Super Maiden (400m) was landed by Kingsbrae Kim for Charlie Northfield in 23.28 while the Terminus Hotel & Connex Cup (530m) went to reserve runner Sin Rap Miss for Adam Campton in 31.07.

The Hypo Magic Silver Final (305m) saw another reserve runner get the chocolates with Panama Boy a comprehensive winner for Phil Ross in 17.64 while the Sires On Ice Bronze Final (305m) went to John's Promise for Ian Darcey in 18.27.

In the Multicam CNC Routers Final (530m) it was an all-the-way victory to the Greg and Carol Pickard-trained Slippery Witch in 31.21.

The feature win by the Townsville-based trainers following their first foray to Coonamble last year where they made the long journey home with the Rambet Cup (305m) following Whiskey Diva's grand victory.
