Typhoon Sammy To Create A Storm At Stud

JOHN Dart remembers Typhoon Sammy as a wet behind the ears pup being the most laid-back customer he had ever had anything to do with.

JOHN Dart remembers Typhoon Sammy as a pup being the most laid-back youngster he had ever had anything to do with.

That's saying something considering “Darty” has been making a living from greyhounds for half a century now.

He was always expecting the son of Aston Dee Bee and Zabaleta (by Magic Sprite) to go places. It was a mating he designed for a damline he had been nurturing, in co-operation with the Northfield family, on the NSW Northern Rivers for generations.

TYPHOON SAMMY AT STUD

*** Special: First 10 bitches this breeding season: $1250, 8 remain ***

Dart trained Typhoon Sammy's granddam, Sacheen's Wish, a very smart stayer around Albion Park in the late 2000s.

Dart trained Typhoon Sammy's mother, Zabaleta, a brilliant sprinter around 2015-16, also at Albion Park.

Typhoon Sammy was going places from the moment the Darts put him into training.  When he retired to stud recently after 71 starts for a remarkable 43 wins (yes … 43 wins!) and 16 placings, he had earned $309,000.

It was just that sort of career John, his wife Glenda and son Sam, expected of Typhoon Sammy. He gave them the ride of their lives which is saying something considering the Darts took Miss Grub and Dzeko to Queensland GOTY honours.

John, Glenda and Sam realised very quickly that Typhoon Sammy was special and his place to race was with Jason Thompson is Victoria.

Jason and his wife Seona, and the Dart family, have been close for many a long year. John had faith in the Thompsons turning their dog into a Group star. They did just that.

When a torn gut muscle ended Typhoon Sammy's race career, the Thompsons had already had him DNA tested and checked out his sperm count. It was all systems go for a much awaited stud career.

At a service fee of $1650, Typhoon Sammy, standing at Sires On Ice, is already in demand.

Dart says the Northern Rivers is awash with requests for the dog's semen. And John is also planning to use him on his former classy Rambling Away.

Typhoon Sammy's stud credentials are second to none.

He ran a track record at Bendigo … track record breakers generally make the best stud dogs.

He won the $50,000 Victorian bonus for winning three provincial Group Cups in the one year. Sammy landed the G2 Traralgon, Horsham and Bendigo Cups.

He'd been third in the Bendigo Cup the year before as well as the G2 Healesville Cup and was a finalist in The Thunderbolt the Grafton speed race inaugurated by GRNSW in 2022.

Typhoon Sammy was fast, lightning fast as his record shows. Speed times like 23.15 at Casino, 22.29 and 30.09 at Albion Park, 19.85 at Grafton heralded his early career. And then he headed to Victoria where everywhere he went he went fast.

But, Typhoon Sammy was luckless back in November 2021. He'd won a heat of the Melbourne Cup at Sandown but then lost out in a ballot for a berth in the final.

Typhoon Sammy got 500m with the best of them. It's just that he was a specialist speedster and the Darts and Thompsons concentrated on such Group events.

His longest losing streak was three runs. During one stretch in 2022, he won 12 of 15 starts. He was that good and that dominant.

Typhoon Sammy has a pedigree to match any going to stud.

By champion sire Aston Dee Bee, his dam Zabaleta (Magic Sprite-Sacheen's Wish) won 25 of her 53 starts.

Her mother, Sacheen's Wish (Big Daddy Cool-Proper Jessica) won 14 of 51 starts and was successful to 635m.

This is the very same direct damline of famed producer Brindle County that legend dog man Billy Northfield used to establish a dynasty of great greyhounds.

It includes Paw Licking, which was a high class stud dog and much underrated. Typhoon Sammy's 4th dam Pretty Jacalyn is the 2nd dam of Paw Licking.

Typhoon Sammy brings to stud some wonderful bloodlines and an opportunity for breeders to not only put in chase and pace, but utilise highly proven crosses.

He is bred on the proven Barcia Bale/Magic Sprite cross, but has a strong influence from the Wheeler family's damlines especially through Proper Tears the sire of his 3rd mother.

His dam is bred on the Brett Lee/Big Daddy Cool cross and this is certain to attract bitches by Aussie Infrared.

Daughters of Fernando Bale will suit of course.

Fabregas has always done well when linked to Big Daddy Cool and his daughters have also done well with Aston Dee Bee.

The Brindle County damline has done well in recent times when it has been reinforced within itself and this is a very strong option for Typhoon Sammy.

Bitches with Bombastic Shiraz will suit him as well. This too is a proven cross with his sire Aston Dee Bee, especially via Bit Chili.

A VERY interesting mating could be to daughters of Barcia Bale (Sammy's 2nd sire). This would put Barcia Bale 3×2 in this type of pedigree. It is a proven theme. Legends like New Tears, Ginger and that wonderful litter of sires heads by Amerigo Man and Walkabout Sid, were all bred 3×2 to Temlee in exactly this position.

Sammy is a magnificent looking individual.

He had record breaking pace.

He had the strength to win a heat of the Melbourne Cup.

He has proven sire bloodlines.

He gets his chance to make it at stud.
