IN a huge boost for the industry, the Tweed Heads Coursing Club is sponsoring a $50,000-to-the-winner series in April.
Club CEO, Steve McGrath, said today the race will be an event staged at Casino and Grafton with the final at Grafton on April 20.
The series is named in honour of legend Northern Rivers veterinarian Jack Somerville.
It will be called the Jack Somerville Northern Rivers Cup.
Grafton will stage their ‘Best 16' heats over 450m on April 14 and Casino their ‘Best 16' heats over 484m on April 16.
The first two in each of the heats then head to Grafton for the April 20 final worth $50,000-to-the-winner on a Saturday night.
The runner-up will receive $5000, third $2500 and unplaced $500.
Reserves will come from the Grafton heats.
“Our club wanted to do this to show we are supporting the industry and it will be an annual event with Casino running the final next year,” said McGrath.
“The Northern Rivers is a powerhouse of greyhound racing and always has been.
“The $70,000 series will be much sought after of course.”
Grafton club president, John Corrigan said: “It is great to see such prizemoney available on the Northern Rivers.
“The Tweed Club's backing of the two clubs is to be commended and we appreciate the support.”
