Williams Lands Lismore Maiden Trifecta

STEVE Williams has had some great highs in greyhound racing and celebrated a unique feat when he landed the trifecta in Tuesday night's prestige Ladbrokes Maiden Final (420m) at Lismore.

Williams bred and owns winner Skilled (Barcia Bale-Velocity Monzon) and did the same for runner-up Duplicated (Zambora Brockie-Velocity Shirl) with the winner's litter sister Velocity Summit in third.

Tony Brett trains the winner and runner-up.

Skilled ran a slick 23.88 to lead throughout scoring by three lengths at $13. Steve admitted he had the trifecta a number of times. It paid $490.

“I was never going to bet against my own dogs even though Tony had the hot favourite (Hara's Clyde) in the final,” said Steve.

Skilled is a giant of a dog at almost 38kgs but has always shown potential right from education.

“I liked him as a pup and John Collins gave him a wrap at breaking in,” said Steve. “He said he had the skill so that's how I named him.

“He's the longest dog you have ever seen.”

Williams said Skilled's dam Velocity Monzon was unraced but showed enormous potential as a youngster and was sent to Jason Thompson in
Victoria.

“Jason put her up Healesville for the first time and on the same day he trialled his champ Black Magic Opal which only ran a length and a half quicker,” said Steve.

“Eventually we had to retire the bitch and she was always going to be a broodbitch.”

Velocity Monzon has whelped in the past few days a litter by Aston Dee Bee, two dogs and six bitches.

It was the second Ladbrokes Maiden Series victory for the Williams/Brett combination having previously won with Velocity Zoe.

Kevin Ellis trains the third placed Velocity Summit.

“Even though he won by three lengths and ran quick time, I felt he may have been a bit lucky because Duplicated and Velocity Summit got tangled up in the back straight and that may have cost them.”
