As Thursday night's heats of the Tasmanian Breeders' Classic (461m) at Hobart approach, Englund is confident that the son of Tommy Shelby and Wynburn Cutie has the ability to step up to the mark.

In just two starts, the 19-month-old youngster has showcased his potential with an impressive 25.63 performance in a Grade 6 over 461 metres, where the blue brindle chaser accounting for rivals such as Houdini's Sister and Sundara.

In comparison, his time ranked as the sixth fastest recorded at the Hobart venue for the year, behind Inherited Charm (25.50 and 25.54), Ducati Roy (25.57 and 25.58), and Rupee Rebel (25.60).

“So far, he's been impressive,” Englund said.

“They don't go much quicker time wise at that age.

“He's still getting used to traveling, even though we've been coming down to trial for a while.

“Both Tommy and his sister Polly are checking all the right boxes.”

Ben and his father Tom have worked with an impressive lineup of juveniles over the years, including Wynburn Sheean, Wynburn Cutie, Wynburn Ruby, Wynburn Toozie, and Wynburn Lethal – the benchmark of their past kennel stars.

Wynburn Tommy takes position in box one for the final Tasbred heat, facing off against recent Devonport Country Oaks champion Fuel For Four, which starts from box four for Gary Fahey, a recent Hobart victor in 25.93.

“I've managed to get a few small field trials for Wynburn Tommy, though he still makes a few mistakes,” the trainer added.

“He's the right type of dog that can improve with each run. Young dogs can surprise you at times yet still manage to make a few mistakes.

“They're all still very young dogs, and they need to get things right. If they do, you'll see the best from them.”

Litter sister Wynburn Polly starts from box four in her heat, pitted against Ted Medhurst-trained debutant, Whaled It, which begins from box two.

“She wants to be drawn on the rail,” Englund said.

“Her recent starts over 340-metres have shown she desires more distance, finishing strongly.”

The top two finishers from each heat will advance to the final, which takes place next Thursday.
