Swain Lands Winged Runner Trophy Double

FRED Swain landed a Winged Runner Trophy double when Black Magic Rose emulated her virtual sister All Hands Off to win the Listed event 520m event.

FRED Swain landed a Winged Runner Trophy double when Black Magic Rose on Thursday night at Albion Park emulated her virtual sister All Hands Off to win the Listed event.

An $8 chance, Black Magic Rose (Raw Ability-Fay's Magic), led throughout to win by almost five lengths over $1.60 favourite Hara's Pandora with three-quarters to Special Cyndie in third in 29.80.

All Hands Off (Barcia Bale-Fay's Magic) won the Winged Runner Trophy back in 2021 when establishing herself as one of the top sprinters of her time.

For Fred, the victory was even sweeter because Black Magic Rose had to come back from a major injury back in October last year.

“She fell at Albion Park and the result of that was she split a tooth and it went right through to the root canal,” said Fred.

“The jaw bone got infected and she was on some pretty strong antibiotics to get over that.

“She is really only just starting to come good now.”

Fred was worried the bitch had lost a little confidence going into the first turn at Albion Park because of the fall.

“But, she reeled off a 5.51 first section last night to lead and that's the quickest she's ever gone up there,” said Fred.

He will now give the bitch a few weeks off.

“She's been going back and forth to Albion Park each week and it does take a toll on them,” he said.

Black Magic Rose has now won 12 and been placed 18 times in 41 starts for stakes of $99,000.

She has been second in a Young Guns, third in the G2 Flying Amy Classic and a finalist in the G1 Brisbane Cup and G3 Origin Sprint at Albion Park, as well as a finalist in the G2 Lismore Cup.

Fred has a litter by Pindari Express-Tribal Magic (a litter sister to All Hands Off) at 10 months which he is raving about.

All Hands Off, a 29.49 winner at Albion Park, had a season recently but her progesterone levels did not get high enough to be mated with confidence.

“I want to train her litter and then will give training away,” said 71-year-old Fred.

“I enjoy rearing pups so that's what I will do after the All Hands Off Litter.”
